When Ewan McGregor left his wife of over 20 years, Eve Mavrakis, four years ago, it sent waves through Hollywood.
The Scottish actor and the French production designer married in 1995, after meeting on the set of British TV series Kavanagh QC. They share four daughters: Clara Mathilde, Jamiyan, Esther Rose and Anouk.
The couple cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the split. The news came after the actor was spotted kissing his Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead in London.
Let's take a look back at how their relationship blossomed, and the controversy that surrounded it.
December 2016: McGregor and Winstead are cast in the TV series Fargo. Not long after, Winstead apparently has dinner at the McGregor household and meets his family.
May 2017: Rumours circulate that Mavrakis and McGregor have split after 22 years of marriage after Mavrakis is spotted shopping without her wedding ring.
October 2017: McGregor and Winstead are seen having dinner together in a London restaurant, spotted sharing a "passionate kiss."
At the same time, Winstead announces her separation from her partner of 17 years, Riley Stearns. At the time, the split is amicable but soon gets messy after her involvement with McGregor is revealed.
"Sitting here with my best friend who I love with all my heart. We have spent our lives together and it has been full of joy and warmth every day," the Scott Pilgram vs The World actress writes at the time in a since-deleted Instagram post.
"We've decided to move on from our marriage, but we will stay best friends and collaborators for all our days. We are still ride or die, just in a different way now. I love you always, Riley."
November 2017: Mavrakis breaks her silence over the split in a comment left on an Instagram picture.
A follower writes: "I can't believe Ewan would end things with for [Winstead]. U are so much better than him!!!! Take him for every penny u can!!!!"
She responds: "What can I do?"
January 18, 2018: A then 15-year-old Esther McGregor, expresses how furious she is over the split, writing about it in her song 'Made You a Man.'
With the lyrics like "I don't know how to forgive. I don't know if I can. Ruining me sure made you a man…Seeing those pictures, they're making me cry… Happy Birthday to me, am I right,” it is clear how his children are feeling about the situation.
January 2018: Shortly after Esther's song, McGregor files for divorce from Mavrakis, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason.
Mavrakis tells The Sun the separation was "disappointing and upsetting"
"But my main concern is our four children are okay," she says.
February 2018: Winstead apparently breaks up with McGregor after being labelled a "homewrecker."
A source tells US Star "Ewan decided to throw his marriage away for Mary and now it looks like he's lost both.”
April 2018: Winstead and McGregor are spotted together on the set of Gemini Man, dispelling any rumours they've split.
"The way that she had her arm wrapped around him as they walked out of her trailer and chatted with some of the crew was sweet," says a reporter.
June 2018: McGregor's daughter, Clara, slams Winstead via Instagram, calling her "a piece of trash."
"Most beautiful and talented woman on earth?" she writes in a comment under a photo of the actress posted to a fan account. "Oh man y'all are delusional. The girl is a piece of trash x."
She later comments again after a user tells her it "takes two to break up a marriage."
"Yup it took two!!" the model replied. "Mary & my father :)"
A source tells HollyWoodLife his daughters blame Winstead for "destroying their family."
"It's especially hard for Clara because she's the oldest and so protective of her sisters," they explain. "When she sees them hurting over this divorce, her response is to get angry and lash out at Mary Elizabeth."
She takes back her negative comment in August 2018, telling The Times it wasn't her finest moment.
"I was angry and upset," she admits. "There had been a lot building up to it and a lot to deal with — not to make excuses or anything — but, yeah, it wasn't my finest moment."
2019: McGregor tells Men's Journal he's feeling "happier" in an interview when a reporter says he looks "lighter."
"Today? As opposed to then?" he responds. "I am better. I am happier. I think that's true."
January 2020: Winstead and McGregor's relationship is still going strong, with the actress gushing about how "happy" she is in an interview with Glamour UK.
"Accepting that change is a good thing and that it's OK not to know where that change is going to take you" was a "big turning point."

After kissing Winstead when Taraji P Henson announced his Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie win, the Halston star sends a message of love to Winstead and his children.
"Mary, I love you so much," McGregor says as he points to her in the audience.
"I love you so much, and we'll take this home and show it to our new little boy, Laurie, and to my beautiful girls, who I know are watching, Clara, Esther, Jamyan and Anouk — I said I would say hello to you too."
April 2022: McGregor and Winstead tied the knot in a surprise ceremony on April 23.
The pair reportedly enjoyed a "lovely and joyful" wedding and celebrated with a small group of friends and family.
"They had an outdoor ceremony...The menu was farm-to-table," a source told People.
"They are an adorable couple. They are pretty low-key and like their canyon life. They often hike and go to the beach."
June 2022: Speaking for his exclusive British GQ cover, McGregor made a rare but brief comment about his split from his ex-wife, and the impact it's had on his children.
"A divorce in a family is a bomb going off in everyone's life – my children's lives," he said. "The sort of healing of that is ongoing."
He also commented about the new film he has made with his 26-year-old daughter Clara, You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder.
The film was written and conceived by Clara and is loosely based on her and McGregor's relationship. It centres around a road trip the pair make, where the father drives his daughter to rehab.
In the interview, McGregor recalls the moment his daughter proposed the idea to him.
"She tells me that she'd come up with an idea about writing about us. At first I was a bit nervous. I didn't know what that meant," he says.
"I got the script while I was making Halston. I sat down to read it and I was blown away. It was a beautiful story about us," he says, adding, "There's things that aren't accurate, or are bent, but they still reflect our estrangement for a while."
He says the drive itself is fictional, but much of the qualms and bonding moments are true.
"For a couple of years, we [the family] sort of lost her," says McGregor. "So the storyline is about her realising that she needs the help her father's trying to give."
McGregor adds that he was incredibly "impressed" by the emotion and humour his daughter used to tell the story.
"There's a sort of recognition in it that made me very proud and at the same time very close to her. I felt like she understood more than I'd thought."
